Ceremony 2007
The Justice Awards national ceremony was held at the Merchant Taylors' Hall in London on Monday, 5 November hosted by the BBC's Fiona Bruce. The Attorney General, Baroness Scotland, the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, and the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Jack Straw were guests of honour. Before and after the ceremony and lunch, guests were able to view a "criminal justice exhibition", featuring the work of our sponsors, partner agencies, and also other organisations helping to deliver justice.
The winner of the prestigious Justice Shield, the overall winner of the awards was Mohamed El Sharkawy, an Imam at The Mount Prison in Hertfordshire. Mohamed was commended for his outstanding work engaging offenders through educational programmes that look at accountability and restorative justice.
The People's Award was run for a second year in association with the Daily Mirror. Five finalists were featured in the Daily Mirror newspaper on 29 October. Readers had the chance to vote for who they thought should win via phone-line, by text or online through the Daily Mirror website, and the winner was announced at the ceremony. The Daily Mirror gave £1,000 to the winner to donate to a justice related charity, and the proceeds of the phone-calls and texts have been donated to Women's Aid, the key national charity working to end domestic violence against women and children.
This winner of the public vote was Nazir Afzal.
